Alluvial channel hydrodynamics around tandem piers with downward seepage

Rutuja CHAVAN, Wenxin HUAI, Bimlesh KUMAR

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2020, Volume 14, Issue 6,   Pages 1445-1461 doi: 10.1007/s11709-020-0648-x

Abstract: In this paper, we report the turbulent flow structures and the scour geometry around two piers with different diameters. An experiment was conducted on a non-uniform sand bed with two types of tandem arrangements, namely, pier (T1) with a 75 mm front and 90 mm rear, and pier (T2) with a 90 mm front and 75 mm rear, with and without-seepage flows, respectively. A strong wake region was observed behind the piers, but the vortex strength diminished with downward seepage. Streamwise velocity was found to be maximum near the bed downstream of the piers and at the edge of the scour hole upstream of the piers. Quadrant analysis was used to recognize the susceptible region for sediment entrainment and deposition. Upstream of the piers near the bed, the moments, turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and TKE fluxes were found to decrease with downward seepage, in contrast to those in a plane mobile bed without piers. The reduction percentages of scour depth at the rear pier compared with the front one were approximately 40% for T1 and 60% for T2. Downward seepage also resulted in restrained growth of scouring with time.

Several issues to be further considered in construction of Bohai Strait crossing passage

Hong Kairong

Strategic Study of CAE 2013, Volume 15, Issue 12,   Pages 80-84

Abstract:

Bohai Strait crossing passage is a strategic project, which has a significant role in boosting the development of Bohai surrounding economic zone and East China. In the paper, the construction mode, longitudinal profile, construction methods and planning of Bohai Strait crossing passage is further studied on basis of the common concept of tunnel crossing Laotieshan waterway. It is proposed that the form of full tunnel with two underground stations built in backfilled ground in the sea should be adopted for Bohai Strait crossing passage and that the tunnel should be constructed by open tunnel boring machine (TBM) method, with drill and blast as the assisting method.

Intelligent Petroleum Engineering Perspective

Mohammad Ali Mirza, Mahtab Ghoroori, Zhangxin Chen

Engineering 2022, Volume 18, Issue 11,   Pages 27-32 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2022.06.009

Abstract:

Data-driven approaches and AI algorithms are promising enough to be relied on even more than physics-based methods; their main feed is data which is the fundamental element of each phenomenon. These algorithms learn from data and unveil unseen patterns out of it. The petroleum industry as a realm where huge volumes of data are generated every second is of great interest to this new technology. As the oil and gas industry is in the transition phase to oilfield digitization, there has been an increased drive to integrate data-driven modeling and machine learning algorithms in different petroleum engineering challenges. ML has been widely used in different areas of the industry. Many extensive studies have been devoted to exploring AI applicability in various disciplines of this industry; however, lack of two main features is noticeable. Most of the research is either not practical enough to be applicable in real-field challenges or limited to a specific problem and not generalizable. Attention must be given to data itself and the way it is classified and stored. Although there are sheer volumes of data coming from different disciplines, they reside in departmental silos and are not accessible by consumers. In order to derive as much insight as possible out of data, the data needs to be stored in a centralized repository from where the data can be readily consumed by different applications.
